Hikone Castle
Hikone Castle was established in 1602, on the route between Edo to Kyoto. It’s function was to watch the strong Toyotomi family in Osaka. The castle took 20 years to build and in its defensive and offensive role it was regarded as state of the art. However by the time it was completed the threat posed by Toyotomi had been dealt with in 1614.
There is a lot to see at this castle, including a Umaya, stable. The keep itself was originally constructed in Otsu in 1575, and was moved here in 1602. It is of the borogata type with a watchtower on the top floor. There are four hidden rooms, and gables that are unique to this castle.
Below the castle is the Genkyuen garden, one of the best in Japan.
